In addition to capacity cuts, China’s commodity producers will move towards renewable energy sources to comply with the CO2 emissions targets. The initial capital outlay and ongoing operating expenses will reduce emissions but raise the commodity price cost curve as higher operating expenses leads to market consolidation among producers.

Samuel Chen is a Research Analyst on the Emerging Markets Equities team with a focus on materials, energy and telecommunications in Asia. Prior to joining the team in 2019, he was a senior research associate at AB Bernstein, where he covered Asia-Pacific telecommunications, semiconductors and electric vehicle supply chains. Before joining the firm in 2017, Chen founded Chenstone Analytics, a data analytics firm focused on quantitative portfolio analysis, and held lead quantitative roles with Periscope Capital and Genus Capital Management. He holds a BS in computer science from Western University, an MA in economics from the University of Toronto, an MS in computer science from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from INSEAD. John Lin is the Chief Investment Officer of China Equities. He has been a Portfolio Manager for AB China Equities since 2013 and for Emerging Markets Value Equities since 2021. From 2008 to 2022, Lin served as a senior research analyst, responsible for covering financials, real estate and conglomerate companies in Hong Kong and China. He joined the firm in New York in 2006 as a research associate, covering consumer services companies for US Small & Mid-Cap Value Equities. Previously, Lin was a technology, media and telecom investment banker at Citigroup. He holds a BS (magna cum laude) in environmental engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned the distinction Graduation with Honors.
